Beads, beads and more beads!

In a recent post about cutlery wind chimes  I showed a variety of chimes which featured on Pinterest. It was difficult to decide on which one I preferred but, as I have a stash of beads from the days when beading was popular, I chose the beaded chimes. The plan is to attach them to a colander I bought on special a couple of months ago.

Hopefully mine will end up looking like this one on Pinterest although I think I will replace the forks with spoons. I don't think the menfolk would appreciate a fork falling on their head while relaxing on the front verandah. The mind boggles!

I have been able to pick up a few silver spoons in the Op Shops lately...

...including these three which were quite badly tarnished but came out nice and shiny after being given the foil, bicarb-soda and salt treatment. Just line the base of your sink or a saucepan with aluminium foil, throw in a teaspoon of bicarb-soda and a teaspoon of salt and cover with boiling water and in a few minutes the tarnish will be gone.

I love the design on the handles and these spoons are destined to be used as stamped spoon plant markers.

Remember the quirky vase I thought I might use to hang my chimes from...well it cleaned up really well and I think I will continue to use it as a vase.

It is quite unusual, isn't it?

I bought a couple of coloured colanders last year when they were marked down and originally intended to put plants in them as they already have drainage holes. :-) Now I've decided to do that with the white one....

...and the red one will be used for the top of the chimes which the beaded wire will be attached to.

Now...all I have to do is get motivated and go through my bead stash and decide which ones to use.

Then I have to work out how to put it all together. Should I use wire or fishing line for the beads and how will I attach them to the colander so that they will be secure? I guess I will have to take into consideration the weight of the spoons as well. So many questions to answer. Hopefully I will work it out and get it made before the end of the year. That is if I can stop running my fingers through the boxes of beads. I find that very therapeutic for some reason.

So, what do you think? Would you use fishing line or wire?

  1. Fishing line, some of the thicker stuff. Wire will eventually lose integrity at the places where the stuff on the chime move. Fishing line lasts practically forever, as evidenced by the whale that was recently rescued with more than 200 feet of the stuff entangled all around it.

It is a little wasteful of the line, but use long tails and whatever knot you like. I like the figure-eight, and the square knot. The problem with fishing line is that is bendy, but does not like to stay knotted. Huh, I wonder if there are specific fishing knots. Back in a minute.

    This one looks easy: http://www.fieldandstream.com/photos/gallery/kentucky/2006/06/field-streams-guide-basic-camping-and-fishing-knots-now-more-new-kno?photo=10

Just to make it more secure, my plan, when I finally get around to making my chime for the porch, is the cover the knots with clear, outdoor silicone caulk.

I cannot wait to see yours!

    1. Thanks for that, J. I will have to raid my husband's fishing gear and see what I can come up with. I was thinking that the fishing line would probably be a bit more sturdy than wire. Now I just have to get around to making the chimes. :-)

    1. Thanks Damaria. I just need to sit down and plan how to do it.
