Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Cooking Information and Demonstration ~Simple Living Toowoomba

On the 23rd May our Simple Living Toowoomba group will be holding a Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Cooking Information and Demonstration. The presenter, Janelle, is very knowledgeable in this field as she has had first hand experience with several family members.


The workshop will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 23 Glenvale Road, Toowoomba from 10-12 noon and the cost is only $5.00.


Janelle will take us through some basic information about gluten, coeliac disease, and label reading; have a chat about ingredients, foods to avoid, and how to cook gluten-free and dairy-free on a budget; as well as give tips that will help children and adults live gluten-free. She will also demonstrate how to cook with some of her favourite gluten free and dairy free ingredients, including quinoa and polenta.



Everyone is welcome to attend and if you would like to come along please fill out the Contact and Booking Form. It would be appreciated if bookings could be made by the 19th May. This should be a really informative morning so do bring along any friends that have an interest in the subject as many people seem to be gluten intolerant these days.



Here is a gluten-free recipe that our co-ordinator Margy made last year for morning tea which tasted very yummy.

Jam Surprise Muffins (gluten-free)

200g gluten free self-raising flour
100g caster sugar (I put in less)
1 large egg
75ml olive oil
150ml milk
1/2 teasp vanilla extract
40ml strawberry jam

For the sugar coating:
25g butter, melted
25g caster sugar

1. Heat the oven to 190 degrees. Line a 12 hole patty tin with paper cases. Next sieve the flour into a bowl and stir in the sugar
2. In a large jug mix together the egg, olive oil, milk and vanilla extract using a fork.
3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir gently together until just combined.
4. Put a teaspoonful of the mixture in the base of each paper case. Top with a dollop of strawberry jam. To with the rest of the muffin mixture.
5. Bake for 10 minutes until well risen and firm.
6. Put the sugar in a shallow bowl. Brush the tops with melted butter and dip in the sugar to coat the tops.




Before the demonstration we will be having a swap and if you would like to participate in that then bring along up to five homegrown or homemade items to swap and put them on the swap table when you arrive. After a cuppa we will then start the swap before moving on to the demonstration.



We have more great workshops lined up for the rest of the year including an Organic Gardening Workshop on the 13th June when a horticulturist from Bunnings will be speaking so if you have any questions about organic gardening then just email them to me and I will be able to let him know beforehand. A workshop on making Camembert cheese is also in the pipeline.

  3. This sounds interesting and although I don't have the issue, it is always cool to learn something new. I am however sort of ambivalent about gluten free - see I have always thought dieting would be easier if I had a food allergy or two but I am so glad I don't because it is so much more work to worry about them! You will have fun though!
