A Sugar Free Muesli Bar Mix

Recently I saw an I Quit Sugar Muesli Bar Mix made by Nature's Own in the supermarket and I wondered how you could find anything healthy in a packet mix and wanted to check the ingredients but didn't have my glasses on (as usual) so bought a packet while it was on special to check it out.

As we were all bringing a plate for morning tea last Saturday when Rhonda was visiting,  I thought I would try out the recipe and cut the mixture into smaller pieces rather than muesli bar size.

In the above photo you can read what the ingredients were and to that I had to add 1/2 cup rice malt syrup, 1/4 cup coconut oil and 1/4 cup boiling water.

It actually turned out to be quite tasty but probably not sweet enough for those who were used to eating a lot of sugar but it was okay for me as my taste buds have changed over the past few months since lowering my sugar intake.

I wouldn't make it a practice to buy packet mixes very often as they are quite expensive unless they are on special but I did buy another one at the same time which I haven't tried as yet and that is a Savoury Muffin Mix - Flax and Polenta. I don't bake very much especially since giving up using sugar in my cooking so the menfolk were quite pleased to smell something in the oven :-)

Here is another Bromeliad flowering. There certainly are a lot of different varieties of Bromeliads with quite unusual flowers. You wouldn't want to brush up against this one!

What a difference a week makes! Last Friday it was snowing at Stanthorpe and today it was like a balmy Spring day and according to Weatherzone we had an unseasonal warm blast. It was 33C in Mt.Isa and we even got to 20C here. However, we will be going back to our colder temps next week and it will be 2C on Tuesday. My tomatoes are still surviving so I keep hoping we won't have a really bad frost and I will be able to keep picking at least a few each day until the warmer weather arrives in September.

I hope it isn't too cold or too hot where you live. I know some of my US friends are really feeling the heat at the moment and I guess it won't be too long before we are in the same situation. Our winter doesn't really last all that long and we don't have the long drawn out cold weather like in the Northern Hemisphere so we can't really complain.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

    1. Yes Phil. My hubby used to buy them at garage sales and one lady who had heaps of them just gave him all the ones that she didn't sell. They can be quite expensive to buy.

  2. I like that the mix contains only whole foods and that if you want a nice bar you do not have to buy individual ingredients that might not be used quickly. I wish there was something like that here.

  3. That muesli bar mix actually looks quite nice Nanna Chel. I've always loved sunflower and pepita seeds in a slice. I trust it was enjoyed by all? Love the bromeliad. We have one of those too. I think it's my favourite. Gorgeous piccie. Mimi xxx

  4. Love the Bromeliad!! They are fascinating and they make me think of rainforests and the tropics, which of course is really where you live! I have never seen that brand of mix before but I'll bet somewhere on the 'interwebs' someone has got a recipe that is close. So impressed that you are still going strong on the no sugar front! Stay warm!

    1. Kathy, we don't live in the rainforest or the tropics. The tropics are way up north. We live in a cool temperate zone :-)

    1. Selina it has cooled down tonight but tomorrow will be warm and then the cold weather kicks in again. Only another month or so of winter.

  7. Such a beautiful flower on that Bromeliad Nanna Chel.

I too, like Selina, replace sugar with organic honey that our friends supply us. If my memory serves me correct, I don't think Sarah from I quit sugar uses honey. I don't get why. Organic honey is so good for you as it contains a natural antibiotic. It is referred to as liquid gold because of its health benefits. I use it regularly. I sometimes use rice malt syrup, but prefer honey.

The muesli bar mix does look and sounds pretty good. The ingredient list doesn't have any names you cant pronounce, so must be okay.

    1. Tania, no Sarah doesn't use honey. I just did a search on her website and came up with this reason why https://iquitsugar.com/sarahs-stance-is-honey-better-sugar/?nonce=c4257f09a1.
If I needed to I would take Manuka honey for medicinal purposes...no problems.

  8. I agree that your tastebuds change after giving up sugar Chel. I had to eat some chocolate slice to be polite at my dad's nursing home recently and boy was it sweet! I usually make scones these days. Not super healthy I suppose but they hit the spot on cold days.
