A cute little knitted bunny

Last week a friend linked to a tutorial on how to make a really cute knitted bunny from a square. They are really easy to make and would even be suitable for a child who can do basic knitting and sewing to make. The full instructions can be found on Jo So and Sew.

I won't replicate a perfectly good tutorial but basically all you have to do is knit up a square by casting on 28 stitches on 4mm needles.

Once you have knitted your square, with big stitches do a running stitch from one side to the other and then up to the middle and down again as shown by the dark yarn in the photo above.

Then pull the yarn to create the ears and tie off and then sew down the back and insert your filling before closing up the bottom section with running stitch and then pull it tightly so that this part comes up to the bunny's neck and tie it off tightly. I couldn't really understand this at first so do read the Knitted Bunnies instructions thoroughly.

Make a pompom or find something suitable for a bunny tail and sew it on. I am a bit rusty with my pompom making and I had no white yarn so used pink.

Then fiddle with the ears until you are happy with them and put a few stitches in to hold them in place. Then you can add a few embellishments if you like taking into consideration the age of the child or person you are giving the bunny to.

I am sure that this will be a gift that will be much appreciated. You could make them in all colours of the rainbow. There are a few variations of bunnies made from a square like this one on Lebenslustiger.com. and this one on the same site.  There are a few more photos on The Whoot if you are interested. My granddaughter can knit a dishcloth in garter stitch so she would be able to make these for her friends with a bit of help from mum.

When I first read this tutorial I had a dishcloth on hand that I had just finished knitting from string which was actually white but looks yellow in the photo. So I fiddled with it to see how easy it would be to make a bunny and it was a breeze. I didn't finish it off as I wanted to pull it apart again so the ears weren't facing the right way and there were no bows etc. added and that gave me the idea that you could knit a square in soft cotton to make a bunny and it would be a nice baby shower gift and could be undone to be used as a face cloth later on when the baby was born. What do you think? I think these bunnies are really cute and children would love them.

Recently we received our Rates Notice and annually we are able to go to the Council Nursery and pick out two plants for free. This year we picked two varieties of Gardenias and there was also a table of  Gazanias which anyone could take a pot from if they wanted a third plant. I don't really like Gazanias all that much but we took one anyway and the flower is quite pretty when it is open. Of course it closes up at the end of the day. We just have to remember to plant them out one of these days. I wonder if all Councils give out free plants. Does yours?

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. We are having cool nights and mornings and warm days.

    1. That's a shame, Meg. We have the Carnival of Flowers here in September so I guess the Council encourages everyone to have a nice garden.

  3. Our local Toowoomba council gives away free mulch once a month, that is worth checking out as it is a huge pile from all the green waste and is great for the garden.

    1. Margaret, my hubby doesn't like that mulch and much prefers the North Street lot.

  4. Adorable! That may be a good Easter do up in a hurry! I'll bet it would work in a quick crochet too, you think? Thanks

    1. Kathy, crochet would be fine too. You just need a square.

  5. Very timely post just in time for Easter. Nope, definitely no freebies here from our Council who keep jacking up the rates so much, soon no one will be able to afford to live here. It will be for the elite only. It's a wonderful idea to give people plants of their choice, what a great Council you have.

    1. Our city is called 'The Garden City', Sally so gardening is encouraged. I think our Council does a good job.

  6. Lovely bun bun Chel. Our council in Boonah allows us two plants per year, but the Southern Downs are not as generous.

  7. That's a cute little bunny Chel!~ As for the Gazanias, I am rather made for them, but ours are salmon pink and deep burgundy, so a little different to the norm. Love, Mimi xxx
