Bird's Nest Necklace

Back in the day....as they say....I used to do a lot of beading. I made necklaces, earrings, bracelets etc. and thoroughly enjoyed the hobby which was very popular at the time. After a while it lost its popularity as is the norm with some crafts but I have lived long enough to see forgotten crafts come back into vogue so kept all my beads and tools....just in case.  Something I had never done was wire wrapping and the other day I came across a Bird's Nest Necklace on a blog and it looked quite easy to make so I gave it a try.

What I didn't know at the time was that these necklaces are extremely popular and a visit to this page on Pinterest left me in no doubt about that fact. So I had a look at some of the tutorials there and the one by Sarah Ortega seemed to pop up all the time.

I also watched a YouTube video by Beadaholique and I quite liked the 'messy bird's nest' made in the video so I unearthed my bead stash and wire and off I went to make a messy one.

This was my first attempt. I quite liked the effect so started another one as they are quick and easy to make.

I used silver and gold wire for this one. The next one I make will be a 'tidy' bird's nest like the ones in the tutorial by This Lil Piglet.

Sometimes a necklace isn't quite long enough to wear with a T Shirt so a little hint is to add a length of chain to your necklace which will be covered by the collar.

You just have to measure how long you want the finished chain to be and then add a Lobster Clasp to one end of the smaller length of chain which can then be attached to the longer length and ....voila...you have a longer necklace!

Just a reminder to anyone wanting to come along to our Simple Living Toowoomba group's morning tea, swap and cheese making workshop on Saturday 24th to book in by tomorrow if you can. Everyone is most welcome. You can find the booking form here

  1. Hi Nanna Chel,
I've done beading wayback then too. And have my stash. I even have some of those beads too! Those nest look fantastic I'll have to give them a try.

Oh and I'll be at the workshop. Also, don't go out of your way to buy one of those potholder looms. I've made myself a new larger one and you can have my older one. I'll give it to you at the workshop if you are there. If not I'll pop it in your mail box.
