Golden Milk

Have you ever heard of 'Golden Milk'? During our last summer, when those in the Northern Hemisphere were enduring a particularly cold winter, I seemed to come across quite a few references to a warm milk containing Turmeric and Ginger which was used to fight colds and flu. The addition of Turmeric gives the beverage a lovely golden colour...hence the name I guess.

When we experienced the cold, bone chilling weather recently I thought it was time to make a batch but was a bit hesitant as I wondered what turmeric would taste like in a drink. Anyway, I bit the bullet and was pleasantly surprised at the taste which was probably helped along by the heaped teaspoon of honey I added!

I have been intending to add Turmeric to my Herbs in Focus series. These are herbs we have growing that I want to learn more about and incorporate into our diet a little more. So far I have included Gotu Kola,  Aloe Vera, Herb Robert, Stevia, and Brahmi. At the moment our turmeric plant has died off so I will write more about it when we dig it up later on in the year. This year I intend to freeze some in ice cubes to add it to meals like Jeff Heriot does.

There are a variety of recipes on the internet for Golden Milk and you only have to do a Google search to get lots of results including one on Fresh Bites Daily and Nourished Kitchen. I don't like anything too complicated so used the following ingredients to make mine:

Golden Milk

2 cups Unsweetened Almond Milk
1 teaspoon dried ginger
1 teaspoon dried turmeric
1 teaspoon honey or to taste
A sprinkle of black pepper

Method

In a saucepan add turmeric, ginger and pepper to the milk and stir well. Bring milk to a simmer and watch that it doesn't burn. Then turn off the heat and leave it for ten minutes or so before drinking it warm.

Apparently adding the sprinkle of pepper helps with the absorption of turmeric.

As I said there are lots of recipes and methods of making Golden Milk on the internet. Give it a try and I am sure you will enjoy it.

  1. Regular cow/goat milk, full fat. Dried ginger and turmeric, a nice grind of black pepper. No sweetener. It was my favorite drink in any season.

I need to avoid dairy, and never thought of using almond milk. Thanks so much!!!

And, turmeric is good in just about everything.

    1. That was my first taste of almond milk and it is quite nice. Of course I should make my own but almonds aren't all that cheap to buy unless they are on special. Yes, turmeric is just a great addition to one's diet and I need to use it more.

  3. Something new to try. I don't think I've ever had turmeric in anything but I have heard and read about it. Turmeric seems to be something worth looking in to. Thanks for sharing, Nanna Chel.
