Wild Weather

It has been rather breezy here at the beach and yesterday even the seagulls were flying backwards. The boardwalk was noticably quiet as only the most determined tourists kept up their daily walk from beach to beach. We weren't among them by the way in case you were wondering :-)

We had a very quiet day mainly spent indoors as it was quite unpleasant out in the wind and light rain. One of the ladies on the Down to Earth forum recently knitted some dishcloths from cotton string and I had been looking for some similar string at home to give it a try but without success as I couldn't find any soft enough. I saw some in a 'cheap' shop on the weekend so bought a pair of $2 knitting needles as I had left mine at home and knitted up an easy garter stitch dishcloth and just have to finish it off with a wool needle.

I am not an experienced knitter and was quite pleased with it. When I was in Mt.Isa I taught my six year old granddaughter to knit a super easy one too and now she is going to teach her mother how to make one ;-)

On Sunday we went to the markets in Bulcock Street but I was a bit disappointed with them as there didn't seem to be as many handmade outlets as there were this time last year. So we walked up to the Caloundra Arts Centre which was holding an Arts and Crafts Fair. Everything was handmade there so I was happy. We noticed some biros made from various woods and enquired about them and were told that the men who made them were woodturning outside and making them to order. So we wandered outside to have a chat. However they weren't actually making biros but unpickers with wooden handles which had me intrigued.

I asked what they were used for and the men said that they are very popular with the quilters at the centre. Seeing as I have some arthritis in my hands I bought a Camphor Laurel one as that was the thickest one. They had thinner ones in Rosewood which I would have liked too but thought the thicker one might be more comfortable to use.

My son bought a biro as well and I think the wood was called Orange Box.

Yesterday I ventured down to the jetty at the back of our units in between showers and saw several seagulls sitting there watching a larger bird eating a fish. I don't know what these birds are called but those who live on the coast would know I am sure. The scene looked so funny as obviously the seagulls were waiting in line to get their share. I couldn't get too close to them without them flying off so had to zoom in on the iPad which makes the photo a bit blurry unfortunately.

Eventually they got sick of waiting and took off to where the tourists eat their fish and chips but as soon as they were airborne the wind pushed them backwards. LOL!

The larger bird was probably quite pleased to see the back of them as he had a hold of that fish and was in no mood to share!

Our holiday is nearly over but tomorrow we are having a Down to Earth forum get-together which should be an enjoyable time if it is anything like the one we had last year. The weather should be fine and warm which will ne nice. Thankfully there are no storms forecast until the weekend by which time we should be home again and I am sure I will be pulling out weeds by then as lots will have grown after the rain that fell recently. I also look forward to catching up with everyone's blogs once again.

Have a great week everyone!

  1. Haven't you ever had a 'quick unpick'?

This weather is driving me nuttso and its not even summer yet! Yesterday we had a hot, 30C day but it cooled off by 5pm (we are about 10km from the coast, as the crow flies). Today its 16C and raining! I do love the rain though as our lawns and gardens love it.

I need to get back to so e knitting, I have that throw rug to finish before I start my crochet project...

    1. Faye, it is only basic garter stitch that I used. My granddaughter is very quick to learn new crafts. The next lesson will be a crochet one I think.

    1. Monica, I don't mind having a slow holiday at all :-) Yes we are in the same unit as last year. Being so close to the water there is a nice sea breeze so no need for aircon which is just as well as there isn't any. LOL!
