Good Onya, Onya!

Have you ever heard of Onya products? Well, I must have been living under a rock as I hadn't until I read about them in a recent  Simple Living Toowoomba blog post. So I followed the link and did a bit of reading about how the company started up, how their products are 100% recyclable and when possible are made from recycled material such as rPET which is a fabric produced from recycled plastic water bottles.

Reusable Shopping Bags

Of course that led me to look through the list of products they have for sale which are an alternative to single use plastic products. I was very impressed so rang the company today to ask permission to use some of their photos on my blog to promote their great products and I spoke to Hayley who was very helpful and sent me a number of photos to choose from.

I particularly like the Reusable Shopping Bags shown in the photo above which come in large and small. I love the bright colours and how sturdy they look. You can watch Hayley talking about the size comparison of the bags in this YouTube video.  The bags fold up into a pouch the size of your fist which would make them nice and light to pop in your bag when going to the shops.

A lot of people I know are sewing their own produce bags at the moment as the large supermarkets are doing away with single use plastic bags next year. Some are using tulle, old curtaining fabric or netting.

However, if you would like some produce bags and don't sew then Onya have packs of five or eight which are made out of rPET and can carry up to 2 kg of produce. These also fit into colourful pouches.

Reusable Sandwich Wraps

Do you use a lot of cling wrap when putting together lunches for school or work? If so perhaps you would be interested in the Reusable Sandwich Wraps. These are made from recycled PET bottles, with a fully foodsafe PEVA lining.  Hayley explains how they work in this video. I don't know if such products even existed when my children were at school so parents are spoiled for choice these days.

Stainless Steel Drink Bottles

I am sure everyone is aware of just how many plastic water bottles are in use these days. It is much more sensible to buy a Stainless Steel Drink Bottle which is reusable and won't be thrown out at the end of the day. I still have the one I bought when I was in the workforce and it is still going strong. The H2Onya bottles are made from food-grade 304 stainless steel which is the material of choice for the food and beverage industries. Aren't the colours fantastic? If I ever need a new one I will invest in an Onya one next time but I don't think mine will wear out any time soon.

Reusable Coffee Cup

Coffee cups were featured on the ABC's War on Waste series and many people interviewed on the show were surprised to learn that they weren't able to be recycled as the paper is lined with plastic and won't biodegrade so therefore can't go into the recycling bin. Also the lids are made from plastic.

I had a chat to Hayley about their coffee cups as I wondered how 'safe' it was to use silicone and she assured me that their cups are made from 100% food safe silicone. They are reusable and can be used time and time again and if eventually they are thrown out they are 100% recyclable as are the lids. This is good to know as Aussies drink more than 400 million takeaway coffees each year.

These are just a few of the products produced by Onya so, if you are interested in cutting down on waste in your household have a browse on their website. You might find a stockist near you or you can order from their website.

Our Simple Living Toowoomba co-ordinator Margy, was in contact with Hayley from the company recently and she is donating some reusable produce bags to those who come to our War on Waste workshop on the 19th August. Don't forget to book in if you live in our region and would like to come. It should be a very informative morning. Also do join in our handmade/homegrown swap as well.

By the way, in the comments on my last post about the workshop, Kylie from Home Is My Haven
gave me the link to the Responsible Cafes website which has a list of cafes around Australia which give a discount if you bring in your own reusable cup when buying takeaway coffee.

Aah coffee!!! I am just starting to enjoy drinking coffee again after having the flu as I couldn't stomach it for a couple of weeks. Such a tragedy! ;-)

  2. Great minds think alike. I've been emailing and visiting a small local health shop about produce bags. I mentioned The Swag to them which they've been looking into. They will stock them soon to see how they go. Whilst there I purchased a new product from Ever Eco which are almost identical to your bags above. I have a pack of 4 extra large reusable produce bags made from recycled PET drink bottles. They also fit into little carry bags to go into your handbag. I currently have them in the fridge with my produce and it makes me smile.

  3. We've been using Onya produce bags and S.S water bottles for about three years. Love that you can order replacements tops for the water bottles. The small bottle fits nicely into my handbag. Recently made myself some more produce bags as they help keep the vegetable trays organized in the fridge. Ruth

  5. I have had an Onya backpack for years. I got it at the Emundi markets where a lady selling Onya products had a stall. Thanks for this blog post, I'll go to their website next payday and get some of the produce bags - I keep meaning to sew some, but haven't managed it yet.

  7. Wow Chel these look like great products. Like you I have a stainless steel water bottle that is still going strong, so wont need another for a while. Whilst we were away and out and about I had forgotten to pack a water bottle. I did not want to purchase a plastic bottle. I found in the supermarket glass water bottle. The do have a plastic lid but the bottles are so handy. They have been used a lot over the last 7 weeks.
Sorry I didn't contact you whilst we were in Toowoomba. We will be back at Christmas and I will hopefully catch up with you then.
