The *Little Aussie Rustics* Mini Rocket Stove

One of the young girls from our Simple Living Toowoomba group was taking part in a mini-market on the weekend and I was intrigued when reading about the type of items that would be selling to see that there were going to be 'Rocket Stoves' for sale. Well, I had no idea what a Rocket Stove was so I had a look on Pinterest and WOW! ...there must be hundreds of tutorials on there for making them. Most of them seemed to be made in the USA and the CEO spent hours on YouTube on Friday night looking at a number of them as he thought they would be great to take fishing. So when Saturday dawned we were at the market quite early to check out an Aussie version.

Unfortunately, Stephen, who makes them was unable to get to the market but I was told that he sold his stove on ebay so I checked out  his listing when we got home. As I am always happy to promote local, small businesses on my blog if they make items that my readers would be interested in, I emailed Stephen to ask him if that would be okay and he sent me some photos and information to share with you all.

This mini stove would be great to take camping or to have on hand in case there was a power outage and you didn't have gas or a Bar-B-Que to cook on. It would be easy to store and not hard to use I would imagine.

We have an endless supply of wood here so finding some sticks wouldn't be a problem at all.

Here is Stephen's information about his stove:

  1. I have always thought that it would be nice to have one. There are so many ways to create a bit of heat and the option to cook just enough to get me through one of our power outages.

They do not happen often, but it can be an mild inconvenience to not have something hot and comforting to drink whilst sitting in a cold house. In the dark.

I know how to make a few more simple kinds of impromptu stoves, and I would not be able to use them inside, but they sure would be nice to have.

Thanks for reminding me. I feel a grammy and monkey boys project coming on.

  2. Brilliant little stove. It would be handy for camping/fishing etc; is the CEO turning his hand to one?

    1. Well Barb. Today I smelt smoke and ran outside thinking there was a fire...and there was. The CEO was working on his first rocket stove experiment which didn't really work all that well. Then there was another try but by then I was curled up in the foetal position under the bed as he was experimenting quite close to our old wooden house ;-) That is a bit of a porky but it was a bit scary. I would rather just buy one of Stephen's. So much easier. LOL!

  3. This reminds me of the wood chip heater we had once......when my parents were building one of their houses we lived in a huge gypsy caravan and a couple of big tents. my job was to light the chip heater and syphon the hot water into the bathtub in one of the tents.

    1. Aah, the old wood heater! I used to be terrified when they started sputtering while I was in the bath. I was sure it was going to blow up when I was a child. LOL! The joys of not having a hot water system back in the fifties.

  4. Jessie from Rabidlittlehippy introduced me to rocket stoves. Fascinatingly simple and hardly any fuel.

    1. They are fascinating aren't they, Lynda. The CEO has looked at heaps of YouTube videos and there is such a variety on there. Most of the them in the US as I mentioned. There must be a lot of people over there ready for a disaster of some type or other. Otherwise they do a lot of camping.

  5. I just really enjoy using them and lighting fires for cooking which is hard to do any other way in suburbia. (Stephen)

    1. Stephen, I noticed you seemed to have yours on the verandah. Is that right?

    2. yes I like to use mine on the veranda, like you would a gas BBQ. Because it is such an efficient and clean burn, there is hardly any smoke. I like to sit the stove on a couple of bricks to act as heat barrier between it and the table. Or a log as seen in the picture.

    1. Tania, I haven't actually seen the stove but it looks very compact and I would think would be great for camping as well as having on hand in case of emergencies.
