Stay Put Towels

During our recent holiday at the beach I had the pleasure of meeting up with some ladies from the former Down to Earth forum (which has now closed down) and The Homemakers Forum which some of the members started so that we all didn't lose touch.

One of the ladies who I have known for a few years, Judy, is the most talented craftsperson and can sew, crochet, knit and so on and so forth and for my recent birthday she surprised me by sending me this lovely mug rug that she made. Isn't it just great?

She had also made some dishcloths for me in my favourite colours, pink and green, as well as a handtowel and a travel tissue cover with my initials embroidered on....

...plus a hanging towel that she had designed after seeing this page online Topsy Towel. By the way, the soap, scrubbie and cheese were in the swap that we had after our lunch at the get-together.

I had never seen the towels before so did a bit of a search for a tutorial when I got home and it seems they are also called 'Stay Put Towels'. There are a few versions online...Embroidery Library has one, Stitched by Janay has another and check out The Spunky Diva too if you are interested.

On a hand towel Judy sewed a square on one end which was backed by some light embroidery pellon. Then she found the centre of the large square and drew lines for sewing at right angles. This was stitched and then cut.

On the underside she sewed a smaller square which was also backed with pellon.  When the squares are finished you just have to thread the end with the little square though the larger one....

...then pull it through and tidy it up so that it is hanging as you would like it.

You could also be silly and put a flower in the top for no reason other than you like the colour ;-) Judy says there is no need to put the smaller square on but she quite liked the look. As you can see in some of the links the handtowel has been embroidered instead of using the smaller square.

It is a little different from the normal hanging towel isn't it? Aren't some people talented?

  4. Lovely gifts! I've recently added the stay put towels to my Pinterest page as PC has a bit of a habit of removing the hand towels from the bathroom, while he's thinking about projects he's working on, then leaving them in odd places!

    1. Yes Robyn, the menfolk here tend to remove the hand towel too so these are great ones which might help them stay put.

  5. What thoughtful gifts you've received, Chel. Aren't handmade things just lovely! I currently use two safety pins on either side of my bathroom hand towel to make sure it doesn't keep slipping off and down to the floor every time our young boy uses it! Those stay put towels would be great solution for that! Meg:)

  6. I love the towels and it may be just the thing for a gift for my Mom who is so hard to buy for! I also love the rug mug - that is one of the things on my "before I quit working" list - to buy one of the embroidery sewing machines, just love the things they do with them!
