From the country to the city

Yesterday a friend and I drove to the 'Big Smoke' commonly known as Brisbane or Brisvegas. Before leaving town we briefly stopped at the beautiful and peaceful looking Queens Park while my friend fixed up her much too loud GPS as we knew it was going to be having to work overtime while we tried not to get lost like we usually do.

It wasn't all that long before the peace and tranquility of our regional city changed to the ...

...hustle and bustle of the big city. Normally we get lost on the way home but this time, just for a change, we turned left too early and got lost on the way there, as the lady on the GPS was really slow for some reason, but eventually we arrived at our destination.

Each year, since our old friend died from cancer three years ago, we have visited her daughter and granddaughter to celebrate her life with them. We take her crockery with us that the family gave us after she died and we all have a cuppa and lunch together and look back at our memories of her time with us.

Her daughter is just like her and is very creative and very much into having a healthy lifestyle. I took a walk around the garden while chatting to her little girl and took a couple of photos.

I love this purple succulent.

She loves all things vintage as did her mum and there are so many lovely bits and pieces that decorate her home.

We talked for a couple of hours then headed back home again before the roads got too busy in Brisbane. Thankfully we didn't get lost again. Before we left home in the morning while I was waiting for my friend, I noticed that a flower had opened on one of the spring bulbs...

...and by the time we got home there were two. In a week or so there are going to be masses of spring flowers in our front garden which will be nice as it is fairly bare at the moment during winter.

I arrived home to find an empty house as my son had gone to the doctor as he was unwell. He woke up this morning and was aching and didn't want to do anything but lie in the sun. The problem is that all our bedrooms are on the wrong side of the house and don't get any morning sun and, although it was a warm day at 23C the house was still cold so what to do?

Aha, I had a brilliant thought! Remember when I made a Pillowcase Mattress at the beginning of the year which I stored away in the cupboard for when my grandchildren were visiting? I got it out of storage and stuffed it with some pillows including some old ones that the CEO keeps for going fishing. Shhh..don't tell!

I put it in the sun on the enclosed back verandah and my son stayed there ALL day. I was very pleased that I had made something which is so easy to use as a bed when it is needed such as during flu season when the rest of the house is cold.

I hope that everyone reading this is keeping well and that the flu has bypassed my Aussie readers.
I know that a few bloggers that I follow have already been hit by it so stock up on the lemons won't you. :-)

  2. Clever thinking, 99. ;) I hope he gets well soon. The weather was really warm here yesterday.

The flu has come to visit our household too. I'm always the last to get it and last to heal. Two people down, and only two people to go. I've been eating fresh ginger, herbal teas and stopping my exercise program so I don't tax my immune system. Nothing has effected me yet, but I don't want to get cocky!

    1. It is nice and warm, Mimi. I just saw warnings out for severe storms in SE Qld. Bit early in the year for that.

    2. I agree! The 'storm' just passed over here and it was just a bit of rain and noise. Hardly a storm ;-)

    3. Yes I heard it was a bit of a fizzer, Mimi. We really need rain as it is so very dry.

  4. Isnt it lovely when you follow a blog for a while to see the seasons and years roll around and annual events repeat themselves. I remember this anniversary of your friend and thinks its such a wonderful thing to do with her daughter.

  6. Blinky, it is so nice to catch up with our friend's daughter and granddaughter although it is very bitter sweet. I can't help but be sad that she is missing out on seeing this lovely little girl growing up.

    1. Our friend collected fine china for many many years...long before it became popular to shop at Op Shops.

  8. Glad you made it to Brisvegas and back without too many mishaps. Just wanted to let you know I have finally made the shrug you mentioned on here some time ago. It's too small for me but will be perfect for my tiny mother, as a Birthday gift. Thanks for the oh so simple idea.

    1. Jane that is great that you made the shrug. I started mine three times and gave up in the end and am using the yarn to knit a scarf. I think I cast on the incorrect number of stitches a few times :-)

  9. hope everyone gets well soon
i haven't been sick for nearly 3 years (only with depression) but i don't go out very often & i don't go to the shopping centre often either, preferring to do my little bit of shopping locally, only do the bulk items in town & that's like once or twice a year now i'm on my own. i also put a slice of lemon in my pot of tea (herb or green or mixed) quite regularly in the cooler months too.
    thanx for sharing
