I think it is sad enough to hear of men being homeless and having to live on the streets but, as a woman, when you really sit down and think about it, how scary and hard would it be for a woman and in particular a young girl, to find herself in that situation. As we know, some girls leave home because of sexual abuse and I can't blame them and often help can't be found quickly especially if they are new to 'the system' and really don't know where to start looking for help.
Add to that the fact that they may have had to leave home in a hurry and aren't carrying any clothes, toiletries and personal products etc. with them and you can see what a predicament they can find themselves in.
So I was so happy to hear about the organisation Share the Dignity. If you look on their website there is a list of collection sites around the country where those who would like to help can donate sanitary products for these women and these are distributed to the relevant charities who are working with the homeless.
What a great idea that the founder came up with! Let's help if we can. There are a couple of outlets in our city which was great to read.
Also when following Nat and Jon's week on the streets during National Homeless Prevention Week, I found a link to another organisation that is helping the homeless and that is Knitting for Brisbane's Needy which had given the two men beanies to hand out to those they met on the street who had no home.
I am sure that most of the bigger towns and cities, both here in Australia and overseas, would have local organisations who are helping the more unfortunate in their areas. Sometimes we are not even aware that these organisations exist so let's support them if we do come across them and help make the life of those they work with more pleasant.
I never thought about this issue in relation to homeless. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Yes, how distressing it would be to not have privacy and the necessary things deal with such an everyday matter. Great Post
ReplyDeleteIt is not something I had thought it before, Lynda.
DeleteWe have a women's shelter here in town that takes in the women and some with children. I had not thought about the unique problems for young women on the streets. Thank you for bringing it to our attention and urging us to think constructively about what we could do. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYes there are lots of charities we could help, Kath.
DeleteLike most other people Chel, this issue had never ever crossed my mind. Thanks for the link to the collection centres - I have found one close by and I will certainly be dropping in with some supplies regularly.
ReplyDeleteThat's good, Blinky. Ours are not all that far away either.
ReplyDeleteDear Nanna Chel, I have a friend who knits for that group. She is a prolific knitter and she mentioned how good your post was on this subject. I agree! It is a terrible thing to manage such simple things as staying clean etc without the usual things... let alone with your period! How terrible. We just take feminine hygiene products for granted yet I know they are a great luxury in many countries. Thank you for this post. I will try and help and spread the word. Love Annabel.xxx
