Have you heard of a Vegepod?

When my granddaughters were really little and starting to eat solids I used to take note of meal ideas I would find on the internet to tell my daughter about in an effort to make vegetables more appealing to the littlies. One day I came across Wendy Blume's Vegies Smugglers website which was full of good ideas while at the same time being very humorous. My interest was piqued this past week when I clicked on her website as she was featuring some spinach she had grown in a Vegepod which I had never heard of before so checked out the Vegepod website to see what they were.

As we have such a variety of wildlife visiting our garden uninvited, I was quite taken by the optional eco-covers that can be bought with the raised or container gardens on sale. We have three resident possums as well as birds that are always eyeing off our vegetables and I thought that the covers were such a good idea as they not only protect the plants from wildlife but also from our harsh weather conditions here in Australia.

The containers are also self-watering via a wicking system which is always a bonus for those dealing with hot, dry conditions and this past summer in Australia has been so very hot for many regions that many gardeners are always looking for ways to save water.

Prices start at $24 for a Kindy Garden and there is an assortment of sizes available. If you don't have a lot of space and perhaps live in a unit, there are also Balcony Gardens which would be suitable for growing vegetables in if you don't have a backyard.

I emailed the Vegepod website asking permission to use some photos for my blog and received a quick reply from Matt who has offered my blog readers the same 10% discount offered on Vegie Smugglers and as well he has kindly extended the discount coupon to 9th April. Just type 'smugglers' in the coupon field to obtain the discount.

So head over to Vegepod  and check out their gardens and read about their great features. I am sure you will be as impressed as I was.

Don't some people have good ideas?

  1. What a wonderful idea!!! We haven't grown veggies for quite a while as our weather has been so terrible but hopefully we will give it a try again sometime there is nothing like home produce. Have a blessed week-end x

    1. I agree that they are a great idea. Lots of Aussies have problems with possums and other wildlife munching on their vegetables so to have the protective cover would be great. I guess gardeners in other countries have critters eating their harvest too.

  2. Well, talk about synchronicity! There I was on DTE posting about my inability to grow vegies in our yard, and here you are with a brilliant idea which would work perfectly for us! Thanks Nanna Chel, I'll click on those links and see what I can find out about buying one (or two) :-)

  3. Ideal to grow summer greens when the sun is baking hot for weeks on end. Too bad I'm waay out here in South Africa. The shipping costs would make it prohibitive, I think?

  6. What an awesome idea! This would be so cool to have now for the things it's just a little too cold to have out full time but we want to get started. All of you in Australia have to buy a bunch so they can go world wide! ;)

  8. Pity they are so expensive. Would love one. The bugs eat everything I try and grow in Melbourne.

  9. Had a problem with the cover staying on when I opened it. Contacted the company and they sent a representative to my home, replaced the clips with a new type and problem solved. Great customer service, hard to find these days. Looking forward to growing lots of veges now and keeping the possums on the outside looking in.
