The end of Autumn

Here in Australia tomorrow is the last day of Autumn and in our neck of the woods we will be saying goodby to May with a series of lovely warm days before the colder weather arrives next week with the onset of Winter.

This last month of Autumn started with a bang when we had the rain event on May 1st which resulted in a number of fatalities as well as major flooding in some areas of SE Queensland. It was also the day I flew to the Outback to visit my daughter and her family which you possibly read about in my post Travel Chaos.

I had a lovely time getting reacquainted with my little grandson who is much loved by his big sisters.

He is quite a character and his facial expressions are just so cute. It will be a few years before he realises I am Nanna as I only see the children twice a year and there are big changes in their growth etc. each time I visit. They make the long drive down to the SE every few years as it is quite a journey and will be even more so with three children now not to mention being quite expensive as well.

Since I have been back home I don't feel like I have achieved much at all apart from knitting my first sock of course :-)

I still have to work out where I can find a pot to fit into 'The Pig' which I bought on a discount table at Bunnings. It is an odd shape which I didn't consider when I bought it.

I am pleased that some of the cuttings I put in are growing well and flowering.

The Lemongrass is still waiting to be divided up. I look at it every day and think I should get stuck into it but still procrastinate. Am I the only person who does that?

Herb Robert is just loving this weather and is taking over everywhere. It is such a beneficial herb to have growing and I am always hoping that it doesn't die off in summer when it all but disappears.

I guess I did achieve something this week as I actually picked some kale for us instead of just for the guinea pigs and I made a green drink out of it. It wasn't something that I would write home about but I kept telling myself that it was healthy. I wonder why the guinea pigs like it so much though ;-)

As I have booked into two online Udemy photography courses I dragged out my DSLR camera and experimented a little with it. There are so many options to use it takes a while to get your head around what they all do. Goodness me, I think I need to weed the pot my pansies are growing in by the looks of that photo.

The Nasturtiums are spreading everywhere and I need to do something with them soon as they will disappear otherwise as the CEO doesn't like them and is always trying to get rid of them. LOL!

I will finish with this photo which I took this morning. It looked like an artist was painting white brushstrokes across the vibrant blue sky. I know that clouds mean something to weather forecasters and these particular ones might have been saying to enjoy the warm weather as a cold front will move in on the first day of Winter. Ha ha!

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend wherever they are. Here though it is goodbye to Autumn and hello to Winter!

  1. Chel, Your grandson is just adorable, such a cutie pie. Re the kale drink, I've been making a morning drink with the curly leaf kale, perhaps try that one - not as strong - I put a little bit of ginger, maple syrup, oats, and water and whizz it up. Quite drinkable. I'll bring you some curly kale on the 13th.

  2. Thanks Barb but we have that growing as well. I will try it out. I didn't realise the kales had different tastes.

  3. Lovely photos, arent you clever. I love the look of kale in the garden but no one is eating it here. What is it with men and nasturtiams, my hubby doesnt like them either and certainly would eat a flower no matter what the chefs say. Your grandson is certainly a character.

    1. I think my hubby doesn't like them because they spread so quickly. They are pretty though.

  4. Love the baby faces! Could you place 2 small round pots in the pig instead of trying to find a square/rectangular one? Lol, I've been procrastinating about pulling up the remainder of the bulbs so I can replant the back garden with veges. Must do that soon or I'll have even more to pull!! Have you thought about feeding CEO the nasturtium flowers in a salad? They are edible and spicy and I found them quite a nice lift to salads I made at the farm :).

    1. I could try the round pots, Robyn. It is hard to find a rectangular shaped pot. We used to have the nasturtium flowers filled with cottage cheese with our salads back in the eighties. I should try that again and see what the reaction is from the menfolk ;-)

  5. For your Pig Pot - just use a green shopping bag cut down to size. They are porous enough for good drainage and will adjust to the size of piggy

    1. That is an idea Phil although I need something to catch the water as the base is wood. I will see how the round pots fit first.

  6. Are you sure those are weeds in the pot with your pansies? Perhaps they are companion plants ;-)

  7. Sherri, companion plants sounds better I must say. Sometimes I don't even see the weeds until I upload the photos to the computer. Maybe I just don't want to see them :-)

  8. My favourite green smoothie involves, half a pineapple, half a bunch of kale, a hand of raw, unsalted cashew nuts, a tablespoon of flax seeds and however much apple juice to make it drinkable. You can use water, but I like apple juice. When I've only got water though, I throw in an apple. This makes two tall glass smoothies.

I find those styrafoam trays, you sometimes get when buying a tray of meat (or baked goods) make good water trays for plants. You might also be able to cut a 3 litre bottle of milk in half, to act as the pot. You wouldn't see any of it hidden inside little piggy.

    Lovely pictures, thanks for sharing.

    1. That would make a lot of smoothie, Chris. I haven't had a pineapple for ages so must buy one. Thanks for the hint about the tray and the milk bottle. I have no excuses for not potting up the piggy anymore.

  9. Love your flower photos, I shudder to think how envious I will be when you are even better at photos! Grandson is just adorable! I hope the round pots work in the pig as he is just so cute! Hope you are through the worst of the weather for the season.

    1. Kathy, I was surprised to find that the photos I took the other day on my DSLR weren't as good as those taken on my little Canon point and shoot! So I really need to learn how to use the jolly thing. Winter only starts tomorrow so the cold is still to come...nothing like you get though of course.

  10. Love the photos Nanna Chel. I adore this time of the year, but come end of August, I'll be chomping at the bit to open the windows and let in the fresh air! Mimi xxx

    1. I am the same, Mimi. We really aren't a nation of indoor people are we? We like the fresh air and the great outdoors.

    1. Yes the piggy is most unusual, Selina. Once you have Herb Robert I think you will have it forever.
