Would you like to say thanks?

Did you know that we have a National Day of Thanksgiving here in Australia? This year it will be held on Saturday, 30th May.

This is a Christian based initiative which has been endorsed by Government and is supported by numerous community groups. The day gives Australians the opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for our God given heritage as a nation, and to thank each other for the contributions each person makes in our communities.

Each year a certain section of the community is picked for the community to say a special 'thank you' to and this year the people to honour and thank are as follows:

~ Fathers, Father figures and Mentors

~ People working in finance departments of Not-for Profit Organisations and Charities

~ Bookkeepers, Accountants, Bank Staff, Treasurers of Sporting and Social Groups

~ People working in Financial Support areas and Debt Counselling.

I always think that it is such a shame we don't have Thanksgiving here in Australia like is celebrated in the US as it is such a wonderful time to come together as families and communities to give thanks. However, the National Day of Thanksgiving organisation is really hoping that our own Aussie day will become more well known and they encourage everyone to become involved.

You can find more information about the day on their website and Thanksgiving cards are available from Koorong stores if you would like to give some cards and don't want to make your own.

Hmmm, I wonder if I will get breakfast in bed on the 30th May!

  1. We keep thanksgiving - not the American version but rather as your post suggests for all the good things in our lives. Gratitude is a very powerful thing.

  3. I did not know this Nanna Chel, thank you for letting us know.

Remembering to be thankful is really important because it reminds us of how lucky we are.

  4. Oh good for you as I have always thought Thanksgiving was such an important holiday. Growing up on the farm, thanksgiving fell about the time we finished with all the harvests - including sugar beets - and it started to get cold, we would celebrate having the pantry stocked and the coal laid in, the beef was butchered and the chickens in the freezer. It was time to take a deep breath and be grateful for all we had. It still is - I hope yours catches on - I just think thankful is a good attitude most of the time anyway!! Remembering to thank people is also a good thing to do on a regular basis!

  5. Thanks for the info Chel. I decided last year that I wanted to set aside a day for Thanksgiving so May 30th will be the day.
