Finally we have a date for when the kitchen and bathroom renos will start so I need to have packed up the kitchen and bathroom items by the 1st November. No more procrastinating! Well, just a little as I had to take some photos of some of the roses that are flowering at the moment as I am quite chuffed seeing as this is the first time I have grown roses.
There are only a couple of dark red roses so far with many more to come I hope but at present there are lots of Hippiastrums popping up everywhere...
...they look stunning with the sun shining through the petals...
..and they are not fussy where they grow as they are coming up amongst the weeds 'down the back'
where the CEO planted them a few years ago. Hopefully eventually they will be moved to the front garden where everyone can see their beauty at this time of the year.

We have so far dodged the super cells that have moved through the Darling Downs and have done so much damage. You can read in this article Queensland hail storm injured mother and baby trapped in car about what the tennis-ball sized hail stones did to a young mother who got stuck on the highway in her car when the storm struck. Her grandma had the skin on her arm shredded and ended up in hospital.
Thankfully we are having some nice rain after the months of dry weather so it was an opportune time to put some of the pot plants on the stairs to have a drink. According to the weather bureau there is more to come in SE Qld and I hope that eventually it moves further north and west so that the struggling farmers get some good solid rains. It will take a lot of rain to break the drought but we hope and pray that there will be some in the next few months.
Hmm, I might put off packing up the kitchen until Monday as it is too wet and miserable to start today don't you think? LOL! Nothing like a bit of procrastination!
Have a great weekend everyone.
The colour of that rose is breathtaking! 🌹 I’m so relieved you missed the worst of the super cell storms. As I write this it’s raining in Townsville, heavy continuous rain with thunder and a light show across the sky that would rival New Years fireworks. It’s the first rain since March and so very needed. Hopefully it will continue through the night and into tomorrow but that’s fairly rare for round here in October.
ReplyDeleteJenny I was thinking of you when I saw the forecast on TV tonight and they said there were storms inland from Townsville. Thankfully you are getting the rain as your garden will soak it up I am sure.
ReplyDeleteIt rained on and off during the night, but today is just overcast - all good though. We got 14mm here at the house and have spent the morning pulling out unwanted plants, trees, weeds and planting cuttings as the soil is soft and wet.
DeleteAh, a fellow procrastinator! Definitely too wet to be packing up a kitchen, Chel! Lovely that you are getting rain, nice for everything to have a good drink. Meg:)
ReplyDeleteYes Meg, the rain is most welcome. I have just trudged through the mud at the farmers' market but I said to a seller there that I won't complain about the rain. He said he hadn't heard one complaint today :-)
DeleteOh I can't wait to see your renovations, Chel and I too am so happy the storms avoided you, have a lovely weekend xxx
ReplyDeleteSue we were very fortunate with those storms heading north if us but a lot of damage has been done to houses and farms unfortunately. The rain is easing off but it is still very windy here. Aah, the renos! Lots of stress ahead I can tell. Where to have a shower is going to be an issue to start off with so I might have to book a motel room nearby.
DeleteGiven that you are packing up your kitchen and bathroom, a motel room nearby sounds like a really good idea to me Chel. A little holiday perhaps? Good luck with it all. Your rose is stunning and my hippies :) are coming up everywhere as well. I love the instant burst of colour. Take care and I hope life doesn't get too stressful for you. Pauline
ReplyDeletePauline, I think I prefer the red colour of the hippiastrums rather than red and white which one of our neighbours has. They grow well here.
DeleteThat rose is an amazing colour, and a lovely scent as well..?I have a couple that look beautiful, but no scent. My garden's full of bright red hippiastrums too, they make a brilliant show. We're all so happy about the rain, we can do without the destructive supercells though. Looking forward to seeing your renos.
ReplyDeleteNanette, the red rose has a lovely scent as does the Blue Moon I also bought as I was looking for scented ones.
DeleteChel I love your Hippiastrums. I was looking at putting in a couple but the bulbs were $14. The neighbour has them coming up all through her front yard. I might see if she wants to trade some bulbs, once they finish flowering.
ReplyDeleteYour rose looks almost black. It is beautiful. I fail when it comes to growing these beauties. I will stick to things that grow for me.
Jane, that is a lot to pay for the bulbs. I hope your neighbour gives you some. Most gardeners are very generous I have found.
DeleteThat news story was awful, those poor women! I love the Oklahoma rose It's absolutely gorgeous & so are the hippiastroms. Hopefully we will get some rain here in Victoria this week!
ReplyDeleteKaren, it has been very dry here so the rain is most welcome even though it makes everything feel damp. I don't think anyone is brave enough to complain. LOL!
DeleteI love the color of that rose. So beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI hope renovations go smoothly Chel. Can't wait to see photos of your new kitchen and bathroom. 😊
Nil, hopefully the builders won't be put further behind with the rain we are having. They were going to replace our stairs today but that has been put back to Thursday as they haven't finished a previous job.
DeleteHa-ha, don't let that procrastination come back to bight you! But I'm the same. Especially when it's too hot, too cold, too dry or too wet. Aren't half fussy, am I, lol?
ReplyDeleteMy Hippiastrums have come up too, and I'm waiting to see what colour they are. They were given to me by a local. My, they are hardy though!
Our hippiastrums haven't been watered at all so they certainly are hardy, Chris. The wind has knocked some of them over unfortunately.
DeleteHippeastrums are a great easy to grow plant. Plenty of rain here after such a very dry winter and more than usual grass/paddock fires.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we have had as much rain as you, Deb but we are thankful for what we have had as it was a long dry spell. Hopefully, there won't be too many bushfires coming up.
