Heading into winter

The weeks are rolling by and we are currently experiencing very cold weather which apparently is about 10 degrees colder than the average May temperatures and the chill factor is taking some time to get used to. Last week we had very scary storms and one night I thought our roof or a tree had been struck by lightning and I actually ducked as I expected the roof to cave in. Some parts of town had small hail and a lot of rain but we only had some light rain here and thankfully no hail at all. The storms have gone and have left us with very cold weather for a while.

The roses have just about finished flowering and I do love this red rose which unfortunately doesn't flower very often since I took it out of the pot and put it in the ground.

A few weeks ago I posted a photo of the skin flap I had done on my nose to remove a malignant lesion. As the results showed not all the malignant tissue was removed it was recommended I see a Dermatologist to have the rest of it taken out. The doctor's surgery is in a very old building here in town which is quite beautiful outside as well as inside so I took a couple of photos of the waiting room while I was sitting in there waiting for my results.

I love these old buildings and even more so when they are heated like this one was today.

I had Mohs surgery which is done in stages as a layer of tissue is removed then the lab work is done while you wait in the waiting room and, if the results aren't clear, then you go back in and have more removed and it can take a few hours before the surgery is finished. However, I was able to leave after the first lot of results came back probably because most of the nasties had been removed 9 weeks ago at the skin cancer clinic. So I came out looking like I had a huge nose when I took the above photo in my car but that's because a nose pack was put into my nose to prevent too much bleeding which  happened with the last lot of surgery and I can't wait to go back tomorrow to have it removed as it is most uncomfortable and I have no idea how I am going to sleep tonight. LOL!

So that's over now and the next drama is my hubby's open heart surgery in a few weeks. That will be most interesting I am sure.

We had a great Simple Living Toowoomba Zero Waste workshop this month. Unfortunately our presenter had some unexpected family illness so didn't arrive so Margy very ably took over and we had a great discussion on the 6Rs of sustainability: refuse, reuse, rot, refill, recycle and reduce.

During our conversation I learned about Banish Disposal and Recycling Program  as well as the fact that shopping dockets are printed on thermal paper and contain BPA. Who knew?

Next month we are having a soapmaking workshop as we have had a lot of requests for one by those who missed our previous ones so Racheal from Birdsong Market Garden will be presenting this as per details below:

Soapmaking Workshop

Date:    12th June

Time:   10-12 noon

What:   How to make your own soap

Where: Range Christian Fellowship, 15 Blake Street, Wilsonton, Toowoomba

Cost:     $5

RSVP:   simplelivingtoowoomba@gmail.com

So come along if you live in our region and would like to learn how to make your own soap. Racheal will be using the room temperature method but we will be discussing the other methods as well.

Have a great week everyone and stay warm if you are having a cold spell like us. Brrr!

  1. Look after yourself, I have had lots of moles removed in the last few years and get my skin checked every 6 months. My sisters partner had something done similar on his nose a few weeks ago. Open heart surgery, wow, that sounds a little scary however the Doctors do wonderful things like this every day. Thinking of your family. Have a good week. Kathy

    1. Kathy, I also have my skin checked every 6 months so I was surprised when this lesion just popped up suddenly. I am glad we have a good dermatologist here in town who knows his stuff. Apparently my hubby will only be in hospital for 4 days or so all being well.

  2. Chel, your surgery sounds painful. I hope they were able to remove all the malignant tissue this time.

I hope your husband's surgery will go smoothly.
    Take care.

  3. I love Toowoomba's old buildings. Made in an era when craftsmanship was held in high regard. Your war wounds look uncomfortable though! Was it hard to breath through the tape? I'm also wondering if you're seeing Dr Bourne, by chance? He was my old GP, that went into skin cancer treatment instead. He was the best GP I ever came across and sincerely sad to see him go.

  4. Chris, it is Dr.Perry Wilson. His surgery is the beautiful old building on the corner of Margaret and Mary Streets.

  5. Very cold here this morning, Chel. I'm up early, rugged up and making my to-do list for the day. I'm baking today and will make pumpkin scones, a potato bake and a banana bread while the oven is on. I'm also making a big pot of split pea soup as it's that kind of wintery weather now.

I love old buildings! This one in your photos looks gorgeous. We drove out to Warwick a couple of weekends ago and there were some lovely old buildings there too.

I hope your nose is healing well and your husband makrs a speedy recovery after his operation too.

    1. Thanks Meg. Yes Warwick is where I grew up and some of the old buildings are quite beautiful although they used to be a tad cold in the winters there.
