What are you grateful for?

When reading a few blogs last weekend, I noticed a beautiful pendant made by young Katie from House of Humble. On it is written 'gratitude turns what we have into enough'. The accompanying thought-provoking post made me ponder on the many things I have in my life that I am grateful for.

The death of an old friend of mine last year brought home to me how unpredictable and fragile life can be and has made me more appreciative of good health and the simple things in life. She was an amazing person who lived life to the full and she is greatly missed. Being a nurse she knew she didn't have long to live and she didn't wallow in self pity but enjoyed the time she had left with her friends and family. I don't think she ever felt sorry for herself but just got on with life.

So when I saw the 'gratitude pendant' I decided I would buy it as a present for myself for my upcoming birthday as I will be reaching retirement age. It will be a constant reminder to me to be grateful for the many blessings that I receive in the coming years...however many they may be. It will also remind me of my friend who loved everything vintage.

If you would like to buy a gift for someone special I can recommend Katie's handiwork. Check out her shop dear delilah handmade trinkets and treasures. She has a lovely collection there. Apart from quick delivery the pendant was wrapped in white tissue paper and Katie had sewn a bag out of a dictionary page and included a little note saying that there was a discount on my next purchase. Very nice!

When the children were little and money was scarce I used to make crafts to sell. In the 1980s I must have made hundreds of fabric covered tissue box covers which were shaped like a house and the tissues were pulled out through the chimney. They sold like hot cakes but it took three hours to make each one. So I know the time and effort it takes to make quality gifts.

I think I am going to enjoy wearing my new 'gratitude pendant'! Do you like it?

  1. I love the gratitude pendant! Once upon a time I kept a gratitude journal and it is simply amazing how many little things one can find to be grateful each day. The concept of looking on the bright side [glass half full] gives a whole new outlook on everyday life, and it is everyday that is life.
Lovely post, thank you for bringing gratitude to the fore of our thoughts:)

  2. What a lovely self-gift. My mother has always said appreciate the little things, like a beautiful day, or a scented rose, and for a long time I thought that was silly; but the last 10 years or so it has been my default attitude and now being a 52 yo cancer survivor, it really does make life even more enjoyable.
