The video is one of Vanessa's from Crafty Gemini. She has a lot of tutorials which are worth having a look at if you have time. I have never sewn a sewing machine cover as I have a solid one for my machine but my girl had a flimsy plastic one which would tear easily and wanted one to match the colours in her 'craft room' which becomes a 'play room' if she tries to do any craft work there while the girls are awake. Can any young mums relate to that? :-)
It turned out quite well, don't you think? My daughter is very creative and has a good eye for colour. Also she liked the yo-yos I had made for the necklaces for the girls so made a bigger one to decorate the cover.
I must admit I had never before seen the technique used in the instructions on the video. Have anyone else used this technique? Perhaps it is quite a common way of making such covers and I am just a bit behind the times!
I'm not very crafty but I do like looking at crafty things. Had a look at the tutorial and she made it look so easy! I love your daughter's cover - it's really pretty.
ReplyDeleteElablue, it wasn't as easy as it looked or should I say it was just a bit fiddly getting the sides tidy. If you look at the video carefully you can see that Vanessa has stopped the camera when she was doing the sides so I think it look a bit longer to get 'tidy' then it seemed to. Still, it is a lot easier to make the cover this way than some other tutorials I saw on YouTube.

Tania, I am sure you would have no trouble. Just cut your fabric a bit longer than you think you might need to in case it ends up being a bit 'crooked' after you have done the sides and then you can just even it off to make it look tidy.

ReplyDeleteKathy, why didn't I think of that! After seeing my girl making hers I thought I would like to have a go with turning those corners but don't need a sewing machine cover. However, a toaster cover sounds great. I wonder if hubby could cope with removing a cover before using the toaster though. :-)

ReplyDeleteGoodness Barb, I hope your tablecloth is in one piece! I think I bought that fabric for my girl from Spotlight at some stage. Fabric is very expensive in Mt.Isa and I think it is only available from one shop. There are no Spotlight or Lincraft stores up there.

ReplyDeleteYes give it a go. My girl isn't an expert sewer ...neither is her mother...but it was fairly easy to sew just as long as you leave enough room in your measurements for a bit of trial and error.

ReplyDeleteDeb, it matches her notice board that she made which is behind the sewing machine. I must try and find some more at Spotlight as it is certainly very pretty. Actually I found a new fabric shop in town today so might check that out too. Then again..maybe I will use up my fabric stash. :-)

I also found the tutorial for mine on You Tube, after going through craft mags and finding all their instructions too complicated for me. I've taught myself a few things via You Tube! What did we do without the internet...spent more time crafting, lol!

There are some very good tutorials out there on YouTube and it is interesting to see how different people make the same item sometimes. My girl needed a quick and fairly easy way to make a machine cover while the girls were having a snooze or were in bed at night so that tutorial was really good for her.
