A Photo Shoot

As my son and I have booked into a photography class on Saturday and have to take along some of our 'work' I thought I had better unearth my Nikon Coolpix camera and actually learn how to use it instead of my little Canon Point and Shoot which I dearly love as it is so easy to just carry in my pocket as I am wandering around the garden. Of course there is no use having a 'good' camera and not being able to appreciate what it is capable of, so the time has come for me to learn .... seeing as I won't read the manual which is too complicated anyway :-) As I had been intending to take some photos of the murals painted during last year's First Coat Festival and the next one is coming up this month I decided that today was the day....just in case some of them are painted over soon.

First up was this mural in Beech Lane which I have never driven up before although I have lived here for over forty years.

It is quite stunning and unusual. Not my usual cup of tea but fascinating nonetheless.

The next three murals are near our church and I see them all the time but have never made the time to take a photo. This one is my favourite.

Across the road is a painting of Steve Irwin which is fenced off making it difficult to get a good photo and I am not terribly fond of this one.

This one really grabs your attention as you drive past and is well worth taking a look at close up.

These are only a few of the many murals that have been painted on old buildings over the past few years. It takes a while to get used to them but they do brighten up the CBD a lot. From the 19th to 21 May in a couple of weeks, this year's First Coat Toowoomba will be held and if anyone is visiting the city at that time they can see the artists in action. There are a number of events planned so check out the website if you are interested.

We also visited the Japanese Gardens a couple of weekends ago and took a few photos. The gardens recently featured on Gardening Australia. The ducks there are very shy as you can tell from the photo.

This is another great place to visit if anyone is holidaying in the area as it is popular with both locals and tourists. It is nestled next to the University of Southern Queensland and is part of the campus. I am sure that anyone with children would love watching the ducks while having a picnic.

Hopefully I will learn some new tricks during the photography class and the day looks like being sunny so it should be good weather for taking photos. Watch this space :-)

  2. I know what you mean about long instruction books and complicated equipment. The course sounds ideal and I look forward to hearing how you go.

My husband did his degree at USQ. I've sent him the Gardening Australia link. The Japanese garden looks so peaceful.

  4. Oh I love those murals. I hope you enjoy the photography class and show us more photos from your future portfolio ;) I had a laugh at that duck ducking.

  5. Really interesting murals. Hope you learn the method to take photos through fences without the fence being visible. I can trick my point and shoot by fiddling with the zoom and macro settings, sometimes, to eradicate objects in the foreground.

  6. I hope you enjoy your photography class. It is such a worthwhile thing to do. I've seen some of those Toowoomba murals as my husband's sister stil lives there. Very impressive. I was also impressed with the Japanese gardens on Gardening Australia.

  10. Chel, are some of the murals to be painted over - is that why it is called 'first coat' - or did I get that wrong? I really enjoyed the photos of the murals. I hope you both had a great time at the class.

  11. Thanks for your comments everyone. Sherri, I know that one of the murals has been painted over in the past but not all of them. I am not sure why the event is called 'First Coat'. I guess they would fade over time due to exposure to the weather and need to be painted over but the event hasn't been going all that long so the murals are still in good condition.
