Bike ride to help our young women

As several of my readers have commented, there are a lot of good things going on in Toowoomba. However, behind the scenes helping to make those good things happen, are many good people including an amazing young woman who is the  co-ordinator of City Women, Letitia Shelton. Letitia, or Tish as she is called, turns 40 this year and to celebrate this milestone in her life, she is going to do a fundraising ride to help with the work that the City Women staff and volunteers do to help the young girls in our city.

Tish also wants to raise awareness of the issues that girls in our nation face including family breakdown, domestic violence and depression. Starting today she is going to ride 40 kms (24 miles) each day for 40 days in an attempt to reach her target of A$15,000 which will be used to help these young girls. City Women is an umbrella for 20 organisations endeavouring to help young women and one of those is Bella magazine which I have mentioned before on my blog. You can watch a short video of Tish as she explains why she is doing the 40 days of bike riding.

She has many friends in Toowoomba including Caitlin from Caitlin's Happy Heart ~ Tales and Tips from a Triplet Mum and Caitlin has written a blog post about her friend who she has known since they were at school together.
A couple of years ago she wrote Fighting For Our Daughters which is now in its second edition. It is a very interesting and captivating book as Tish relates the issues that young women face in modern society.

If any of my readers would like to contribute to the great work that Tish and the City Women team do then you can support her in her attempt to raise the rest of the A$15,000 as, to date, she has already raised $6012. Donations can be made by Paypal or by Direct Deposit here.

I was talking to my friend Cathy last night who was asking me about how I made my rag rugs for my granddaughters so I thought I would give her the link to the tutorial I did a while ago.

So here it is, Cathy ~ Rag Quilt Tutorial. Have fun!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week. Our Down to Earth forums now have a new home so come over there and join us and say hello. It is all sparkly new!

  1. Oh gosh Chel, I just popped in for a minute to catch up. I am supposed to working on my permaculture course this morning. And now I have just spent 15 minutes following links. I ended my link journey at Toowoomba City Care Inc. - inspirational happenings going on there. Fighting for our daughters is such a worthwhile initiative. I grew up in an environment of family breakdown, domestic violence and neglect. Later after finishing high school my first job was in the probation and parole service in Brisbane. Later I worked for a domestic violence/rape crisis centre and I also worked for the Victims of Crime Association, which I don't think is operational anymore. I have also been a kinship carer for one of my nieces. So I have a fair idea of the harsher realities faced by girls and women. It is lovely to see individuals and organisations trying to help.

  2. Sherri, you would have had first hand experience in dealing with the issues girls face which is so helpful in understanding where they are coming from when working with them. I take my hat off to all who work in this field. It is so nice to hear the many success stories of young girls who have been nurtured and shown love by people like Tish and the staff and volunteers. Some of them have never been shown any love before in their lives.
